Today, we’re sitting down with our student Becca Bergman, Founder of Bom Dia Design Co.! Originally from St. Louis, Missouri, Beccas gives us a glimpse into her online business journey…
Q: What type of online business do you own and what services do you offer?
I’m the Creator and Founder of Bom Dia Design Co., a boutique branding and web design studio serving small food-centered businesses in Chicago and beyond!
“I officially launched in September of 2020!”
Q: How did you discover the Bucketlist Bombshells and what inspired you to enroll in their courses?
I discovered the Bucketlist Bombshells through a Facebook Ad while I was searching for graphic design classes in Chicago.
“I enrolled in the Bucketlist Bombshells courses because I wanted to elevate my portfolio and get serious about finally starting my own business!”
Q: How have the courses helped you to become an online business owner?
The Design Skills Course helped me become an online business owner by giving me the tools to create a real portfolio and sharpen my design skills. Through the Tech Skills Course, I learned a lot about social media and how to interact with other accounts and build an online community!
Q: How long did it take you to ditch your 9-5, and how much time did you dedicate in order to make it happen?
In December of 2019, I ditched my previous job before moving to Chicago and I had been job searching here ever since. With COVID, it was almost impossible to find a job. Finally, in June of 2020, I decided to take the step to start my own business and used the Bucketlist Bombshells courses to do so. Once I started the courses, I dedicated about 20 hours a week to them.
“Prior to running Bom Dia Design Co., I was a Project Manager at an agency.”
Q: How long was it until you landed your first client online?
I landed my first client through Instagram before I actually launched!
Q: What is your process for finding and landing clients online?
I have successfully found clients through LinkedIn and reaching out to local businesses. Eventually, my goal is to have my website at a point where my work sells itself.
“I want clients to find me, instead of having to seek them out myself!”
Q: What has been your biggest setback and how did you overcome it?
My biggest setback was perfecting my website. I thought I could design it overnight! (Ha!) I overcame this by working at it every day and tweaking it for about 1-2 months before finally being happy with it!
Q: What’s the most challenging part about running your online business?
The most challenging part about running Bom Dia Design Co. is having the motivation to work on it every single day, even when I don’t have client work! It’s hard to continue improving, but I know it needs to be done!
Q: Looking back on your online business journey, what is something that you’re most proud of?
I’m most proud of taking the leap and figuring everything out myself, while on a budget!
Q: If you could speak to your past self, what piece of advice would you give her?
If I could speak to my past self, I would tell her to start this business way sooner! I keep thinking, “Imagine how far along I would be now if I started back in December!”
Q: How do you stay inspired and motivated to run your online business?
I stay motivated by setting a schedule and clear goals. I also want to reach certain financial milestones, so that keeps me pretty motivated as well!
Q: Tell us what a “day in the life” looks like for you now that you’re running your own online business!
Now that I am running Bom Dia Design Co., my day looks like waking up, practicing self-care, and tidying my apartment and workspace. Then, chatting with potential clients, sending proposals and contracts, client design work, posting to Instagram, and interacting with my online community!
I get to do all of this in my jammies and cook three meals throughout the day which I LOVE.
“The best part about being my own boss is that I get to make my own schedule and do the things I love to do!”
Q: What do you love most about the work you do and the clients you work with?
I love the creativity involved in bringing my clients’ dreams to life. The clients I work with share a love of food and adventure with me!
Q: What is your favorite destination to work remotely from?
I love working remotely from my apartment’s outdoor terrace. I love hearing the “L” train and feeling the breeze off of Lake Michigan!
Q: What’s your favorite business tool that you’d recommend to other girl bosses? Why do you love it?
I absolutely love Honeybook! It streamlines my entire process and keeps me on track. I love the templates for contracts, brochures, and proposals and that everything tracks within your email!
Q: What is your number one piece of advice for aspiring Bucketlist Bombshells?
Give it your all and go above and beyond on all the course mini-projects! Don’t be afraid to really play around with the designs and do more than the outline suggests! It will only improve your portfolio!
