What inspired you to take the courses inside the BB Academy?
Lack of passion in my 9-5, and I had a burning desire to travel and control my life rather than have life control me.
What was the moment that you decided to ditch your 9-5? Did you have an “aha” moment?
I started the courses in November but it still felt like a hobby and a pipe dream to work and travel until February.
I walked into work on a dreary, snowy February day when there was an ambulance outside of my office. It was for a member of our IT department, the most lovely man I had ever met. The kind of guy that everyone likes, brings people together. As I had been working there, I had gotten lunch with him and the most rag-tag group of people from all different departments a few times. Him being the organizer. I think he could tell that I was in a bad way about me when he started inviting me to his group lunch. Two or three weeks prior to this incident, there was a snow storm and I ran into him on the train platform when all the trains were late. He invited my to have a drink with him at the restaurant upstairs being that we were both clearly stuck.
I declined and the Monday after he said that he had bought me a drink assuming I’d follow him eventually but my train finally came so I got on it. That dreary day in February, he passed away of a heart attack. My heart sunk. He had worked at the company as long as I’ve been alive. He has a daughter my age. The company let everyone leave work early that day to mourn so I went to the restaurant, bought him a drink and decided to finally take my life into my hands. I got an angel ya’ll.
How long did it take you to transition out of your 9-5, and how much time did you dedicate a week in order to make it happen?
6 months – I would work 9 to 5, come home and work on my business from about 5:30pm to midnight. At least one weekend day, too. So let’s call it 30 hours.
What does a “day in the life” look like for you now that you’re running your online biz?
I wake up without an alarm around 7 or 8 AM. I meditate for 30 minutes on my balcony in Bali overlooking the most beautiful vista of rice fields and palm trees. In this space I also write in my journal while drinking my coffee and set my intentions for the day. Then I bring my laptop to an open air cafe, read while I eat leisurely and start working around 9:30 or 10am. Then I work until around 3 – usually ordering lunch somewhere in there. Then I go home and get one or two things done before I head to sunset on the beach.
Has the BB Academy helped you on your girl boss journey?
The courses help me package my skills into deliverable products giving me to confidence to strike out on my own.
What’s the most challenging part of runnin’ your own online biz?
Managing my immediate needs. I love my business and get so wrapped up in creating that I forget that I need to work out 3-4 times a week for my mental health and things like that.
What was your biggest setback and how did you overcome it?
I was traveling too quickly. I was itching to travel so I wasn’t focusing on my business as much as I should have been. To solve this, I moved to Asia (Chiang Mai) and committed to being there for a while because I knew there would be a community of digital nomads as well as a very low cost of living. After four months in CM, my feet itched for Bali and now I’ve been here for three months with no plans of leaving.
Why did you choose the Bucketlist Bombshell lifestyle and what does it mean to you?
I’ve always had the itch to travel so it wasn’t a hard sell. It means control over my life, my time and my work. It means creating what I love on my own schedule and loving every minute of it.
Now that you can work anywhere, what is your fave travel destination to work from?
An open air cafe or my bed – which I know isn’t good for your sleep cycle but you can’t stop the creative flow when it comes.
What’s the best part about being your own girl boss?
The lifestyle, for sure!
What’s one travel items you can’t live without when you’re working & traveling?
My kindle. I have fallen in love with reading since I started traveling full time (over a year ago – happy anniversary to me!)
What’s your go-to favorite podcasts that you’d recommend to other girl bosses?
I’m obsessed with Mind Love right now. They talk business but from a mindful space which I’m all about.
How do you stay inspired and motivated to run your online biz?
Connecting with others who are doing the same!
Okay, and our absolute favorite question: What is your #1 piece of advice to aspiring Bucketlist Bombshells?
Failure doesn’t exist.
